Flinders Ranges & Outback: Our Top Spots, Exclusive Accommodation Deals & More!
Get away from the hustle and bustle by taking a trip to the Flinders Ranges and Outback. Think dusty red roads, night skies like you’ve never seen them and an array of national parks. This is South Australia in its truest form.
Here are out top things to do in the Flinders Ranges and Outback…
Explore Coober Pedy
There’s plenty of things to do and see in Coober Pedy, but to truly experience the historic town, we recommend going underground.
Make sure to visit a ‘dugout’ home, as well as several underground churches and art galleries, and historic mines—which now feature walk through tours.
The Historic Old Timers Mine is a great one to visit, featuring two underground homes and precious seams of opal. The Umoona Mine & Museum also contains an Aboriginal interpretive centre, panoramic theatre, historic displays and more.
And of course, if you love opals, Coober Pedy is a-plenty! You’ll find the world’s largest displays in Coober Pedy and plenty of Opal Fields.
More local attractions include the Big Winch Lookout, Boot Hill, the Centenary Mosaic Garden, and more.

Appreciate Aboriginal Culture
The Flinders Ranges & Outback truly offers one of Australia’s richest experiences of Aboriginal heritage and living culture.
Make sure to visit the Melrose Courthouse Heritage Centre, which follows the story of the Adnyamathanha people.
Learn about their culture and connection to land, with a visit to Wadlata’s ‘Tunnel of Time.’
You can also visit Aboriginal sites on several expeditions and 4WD adventures, with sites throughout the Flinders Ranges, including Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, Vuolkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park.
Iga Warta tours also offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience and learn more about Aboriginal culture. They offer a range of tours and activities to suit all visitors, aiming to take people on cultural journeys to learn about the history and lives of Aboriginal people. Journeys include the Malkii tour, which visits a painting site dated to be 35,000 years old; the Ochre Pit, where you can learn about the importance of the ochre; Nguthunanga mai ambatanha (Damper Hill), which visits a women’s site with one of the Adnyamathanha women; and the Red Gorge Tour, which takes visitors to an ancient engraving site over 80,000 years old.
