In Memory of Andy Ruggiero of Prospect Foodland
11 June 2020
Andy Ruggiero has been an icon within the City of Prospect for over 36 years. Arriving in Australia from Montesarchio, Italy in 1963 as a 16 year old boy, Andy followed in the footsteps of many hard working post-war migrants before him. His passion for retail combined with his tireless work ethic and attention to customer service lead to him to becoming the highly successful proprietor of Prospect Foodland, and so began Prospect’s introduction to the vast expanse of Italian gourmet food.
Andy was the recipient of numerous food industry and local business awards during his time in retail. Most recently Andy was honoured with a City of Prospect Community Award in 2019.
Andy will be remembered as a humble and popular member of the independent food industry and the community of Prospect; knowing hundreds, if not thousands, within the community by name. So many young people were first introduced into the workforce by Andy. What better role model for young employees than one such as Andy given his tremendous patience and personal care for his staff. A man of faith, integrity and compassion, Andy had a special place for retail and people in his heart.
Sadly, Andy passed away on ANZAC Day surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. His family, together with the Foodland family and the wider Prospect community have lost a true gentleman. Independent retail shall be eternally grateful for Andy’s immeasurable contribution to so many.
Sam Zucco is continuing the legacy of Andy as the new proprietor of Prospect Foodland, purchasing the store from Andy Ruggiero in March 2020.
Andy and the Ruggiero family will always be a part of the Foodland Family. Thank you, Andy.
