Foodland first in South Australia to launch cost-saving app ‘Gander’ to tackle food waste

Foodland Supermarkets has become the first retailer in South Australia to partner with the innovative app Gander, giving shoppers real-time access to in-store discounts on food nearing its best-before date, reducing food waste while easing the cost of living.

The App displays markdowns the moment they’re applied in-store and removes each item from the app when they’ve been sold or are no longer available. Shoppers can check the app to plan their trip around discounted items, removing the guesswork and eliminating the need to search through aisles, enabling them to save big each time they shop.

More than 10 Foodland stores including Foodland Norwood, Foodland Happy Valley, Foodland Saints, Foodland Henley Square, Foodland Mount Barker and Foodland Sefton Plaza are utilising the Gander App with more stores expected to come online in coming months.

Foodland Supermarkets CEO, Franklin dos Santos said Gander adds a new layer of value for price-conscious shoppers.

“While we already offer specials across our network year-round, Gander makes it easy for customers to see exactly which items are heavily discounted in real time, allowing them to make significant savings,” he said.

“Customers can open Gander at any time and see that Scotch Fillet is discounted by 30% at their local participating Foodland store and there are 10 left on the shelf thanks to an integrated point-of-sale system. At that same time, there could also be 20% off on a range of dairy products or fruit and vegetables to make up a wholesome meal that would see a drastic discount at the check-out,” Mr dos Santos said.

According to Tim Brown, CEO of Gander Australia, traditionally most markdowns go unnoticed by shoppers, meaning that on average less than half of marked-down food items are sold, while the majority ends up as waste.

“Gander flips this by making markdowns visible, timely and accessible, providing users with a real-time feed of available markdowns.” he said.

“We’re proud to partner with Foodland Supermarkets to bring Gander to South Australia. The app makes it easy for shoppers to save money without compromising on fresh food or quality, while also helping to reduce their environmental footprint.”

The Gander app is available for download on iOS and Android devices. To see the full list of participating Foodland Supermarket stores, please visit www.ganderapp.com.au/foodland
